I'm new here and to collecting Colts so please excuse this question but, why did Colt name all these beautiful guns after snakes? Kind of like Ford building Mustang Cobras...

The cobra was the first and I don't know how they came up with the name but after that I believe the story is colt had a contest to name the new target revolver based on the trooper and and employee came up with the python name

I read that a contest was held, and a VP at Colt's came up with the name Python (although the person telling the story- Al Gunther - wasn't 100% sure).

I also read that 'Anaconda' was suggested as the name for the Python, but was discarded because it would not fit on the barrel.
