Wonder when Colt will say yeah or nay to da revolvers in 2014. Not getting any younger here
I figured we already knew. Its a resounding "Pffffft!"

Colt no longer has the ability to manufacture revolvers that can compete with Smith & Wesson and Ruger.

Bob Wright
This is too bad. Colt makes a nice product in every category. I can't believe they wouldn't do well on a run of D.A.'s in any flavor. Sign me up.
Colt is not out for the count. Higher ups in Colt and several gunwriters have suggested that Colt indeed has plans to re enter the da revolver market. They know they need consumer division products to survive, and the da revolver is something people want ,and what put Colt on the map. One reason they have not added more 380s to the lineup is that they will need personnel and resources for the expansion of their revolver lineup. Time will tell but I think the old Pony still has fight in it.
And how would this decision affect current pricing on used D.A.'s?
Guys THIS EQIUNE IS DEAD......We have been hearing this for years and NOTHING HAPPENS.They can bearly keep up with 1911 and SAA orders.I will believe it if I see it and I will probably not see it in my lifetime.

There are hundreds (thousands?) of Colt DA revolvers listed for sale online as I type this.
and thousands of used S&Ws and Rugers ,but still they make new ones and introduce new models. Last I looked they were still building new cars and houses.
Neither of which profession requires the same skill set to produce a double action revolver well enough to actually work, of high enough quality so as to attract a customer and yet be low-cost enough for that same Walmart/Cabela's-cut-price demanding customer to buy.

Everyone wants 1960's Python quality, but they only want to pay a Ruger price.

If Colt makes anything, it'll be along the lines of something that's cast just like what's available today, then everyone will bitch and moan and even though some will buy 'because, well, it's a Colt, and I love everything Colt and I gots to have me some more Colt' - sales will plummet, and sadly, Colt has enough problems dealing with the production items that they've built for generations.

Hell, if it were easy to bring something to the modern marketplace that required a lot of hand-fitting and loving care in construction - they're replicate the Merwin, Hulbert Pocket Army.

But it isn't - so they haven't.

Why would you assume it can't be made? Why assume it will be cast? the new Mustang is FORGED, not cast. Last I looked Colt is not using CAST frames for the 1911 or Saa. The deal is ,and I will let you in on a little secret., if Colt makes a da revolver ,it will be a little less than the old ones ,but a hundred times better than the crap the other makers offer . Colt learned their lesson with the cast Cowboy ,and they are not going down that road again. Colt customers expect Colt quality, and Colt will offer quality ,not quantity.
The retro Chevy Camaro, the retro Ford Mustang, the retro Dodge Charger & Challenger all have been selling well, even though they were a HUGE gamble for the Automobile Manufacturers.
I'd wager that should Colt build a decent DA revolver, aka, King Cobra, Anaconda, and build those in more than one or two caliber chamberings, they'd likely sell enough to branch out to other frame sizes.
Sturm-Ruger markets their wares like hotcakes, yet they began very humbly with a 22lr caliber Luger styled knock-off, and look at Ruger today.
I'm a firm believer that Colt Mfg could pick up the pieces, and once again return to their former glory as a DA revolver builder....the revolver customer base is burgeoning. Just My .02!

Yup
It ain't gonna happen. That ship left port a long time ago.
We will see ,although it may not make any difference what they make ,since in NY it may soon be too expensive and difficult to buy ammunition, thanks to the " SAFE "act.
I wish they would, but you've got to realize, 2014 is not 1949 (When Ruger started with his .22 Mk I). Then was a burgeoning economy, with hundreds of thousands of GIs returning to newly created jobs. Most of them were into guns, and taught their kids to hunt and fish. Kids would walk down the road with their .22s, and men had rifles in the back of windows of their pickup trucks. Dozens of magazines and TV shows were devoted to shooting sports. High schools had shooting teams. 80% of Americans shot recreationally or hunted. Etc., etc.

Flash forward to today. Great Britain and Australia, our strongest WWII allies, have outlawed guns. The US is on the cusp of doing the same, trying every tactic from magazine restrictions to outlawing lead which will be the death knell of shooting. Guns are not seen in open public, most youth have never seen or handled one. The only guns you see are in movies and pictures behind a talking head newscaster relating the most recent tragedy. Probably 10% or less shoot today.

Shooting has become a fringe, marginalized and hated hobby for at least 1/2 of America. Colt is ready to move out of state, overseas, or close like Kodak and the other New England companies that made this country great. You really think they're thinking about making guns they abandoned years ago? Or keeping their heads above water? Hate to give the reality check, but we better all be even more outspoken about gun rights than we were in the past. Or it's all over.

I think if Colt did make a DA it would be made overseas. I'm sure the designers could dream up something to compete with other brands. I don't know if Colt wants to break from the tradition of the past and open themselves up to critical reviews of something new along those lines. I'm sure they would fly off the shelves at first. I don't know - maybe they are comfortable knowing that what was turned out to be the best (in my opinion).
unless made in outer Transylvania ,making it out of the country may not be cheap. look at the Japanese Winchesters. Colt might look at assembling parts in house from outside vendors, like the blackpowder series revolvers ,but I doubt we will see a foreign made Colt da revolver. Outside CT ,maybe

I agree with most of what az said. another factor is colt can't supply enough of their current line to meet the demand. also I previously speculated that colt might be waiting till after the next presidential election to gauge what direction the country might be going in. same crap or reverse course.
but...

I have several times previously said that I believed colt would again start production of a king cobra or ds2 type revolver and I still think it could happen.

Gloom and doom! In 1949 I'll bet there were just as many GI's that never wanted to touch a gun again.

Gun sales are through the roof and, according to an article on ammo in American Rifleman, it's not a bubble it's NEW demand that has ammunition companies investing in infrastructure to handle all the new shooters. This Forbes article states that Remington is spending $32 million to expand it's ammo plant in Arkansas and that there is a 46.5% increase in women shooters since 2001. http://www.forbes.com/sites/frankminiter/2013/10/20/is-the-obama-administration-the-cause-of-gun-ammunition-shortages/2/

I
can't take any of that news as anything other than good. Also the number of concealed carry permits has gone through the roof too, and more and more states are recognizing each other's permits. Just think of the new pistol sales in Illinois alone now that they have legal CCW. Concealed Carry Permit Reciprocity Maps - USA Carry
I live in Mississippi, and we just had it affirmed that we have a constitutional right to open carry. I can slap on my 1911 in a flap holster on a pistol belt and go along as I please and we haven't been able to do that since the 1800's.

My gun range went from 1150 to 1388 or so just last year! USPDA, ICORE, IPSC... the place is packed on the weekends with people shooting competitions.

So in short, I'm just going to have to disagree with you and say that Colt has a market, especially for something like the Detective Special for CCW, especially if they bobbed the hammer and made it DAO.
