Special Combat Government

I took my 9mm Competition Model in for some work today and the dealer had a new Special Combat Government (lower gun in the picture).

Anyone have one of these? Apparently they are fitted and assembled in the Custom Shop.

I have a SCG but mine has the adjustable Novak sight option. They do from the Custom Shop with a signed and dated test target. They are exceptional pistols.

I've had two SCGs, both in 38 Super. My current SCG is the all blue with BoMar type sights. In fact looks just like the SCG in your photo. Good guns, but barrel/bushing/slide/frame are not fitted to the tolerances of Dan Wesson, Les Baer, etc. Trigger pull as received is not bad, but the trigger itself rattled around on both of mine. Top and bottom forward edges of both my SCG triggers were razor sharp, as were the front corners of the mag well. I replaced trigger and mainspring housing on my current gun to eliminate these issues. I like my SCG, but don't know I'd buy another at around $2K. I do understand that to many, the Colt name trumps all in spite of the pistol's actual merits, or lack of.

In fairness, I should add that I've only owned two SCGs, so what I've mentioned may not apply to all. Others have reported their SCGs fitted to a higher standard. I have not been fortunate enough to have owned one of those yet.

IMHO. I wish they would put '70 Series triggers in the SCG's. They dumped the '80 Series triggers on the Competition Models and they need to do it on the SCG's too.

I had a look at the Gold Cup Trophy as well. Nice gun but at the price one might be better off looking for a Series 70 in good condition.

I have a new Gold Cup Trophy in 9mm and really like it. I was going to have some trigger work done on it but it breaks at 4lbs. so I am going to leave it alone for now.

I have a few SCGT. They are the top of the line 1911 to have. They shoot like a dream. They are also my favorite pistols along with my Microtech OTF knives. Also removed the series 80 in one of them and it shoots even better.

Yes, they are from the Custom Shop. Back when I got mine I copied this directly from Colt's online ads: "Competition ready with Smith & Alexander Upswept Beavertail grip safety, custom tuned action, polished feeding ramp, throated barrel, flared ejection port, enhanced hammer, two 8-round magazines with bumpers, extended Wilson Tactical ambidextrous thumb safety, Bomar rear and Heinie dovetail front sight, and S&A magazine guide. Fully accurized and shipped with a certified target attesting to its exceptional precision."

I have one of the two tone SCG and an Ithaca hard chrome that was completely hand fitted. Both shoot about the same and are very accurate. Both shoot better than I do.

I have had 2. I owned a 38 super in blue and hard chrome that was outstanding. However, it was traded away in a deal for mint Parker 12 gauge. I was able to acquire a new .45 SCG all blue model that was built by Dave at EA when he was at Colt and it is an amazingly awesome firearm. People like to say they don't stack up to Baers or Wessons, but personally I have never found them lacking in any regard. The fit and finish are amazing and the triggers are fantastic.

I have had discussions with Dave about them and he loves them. The only change he would recommend is maybe getting a match bushing on them.

Here is a random one for California members.
Not mine. At least enjoy the pictures, if anything.

I have a Special Combat Government model that I bought new back in the early 90s. It had the royal blue finish, trijicon fixed night sights, ambi thumb safety, vidiki trigger and a glass smooth action. I carried it daily as my duty weapon up until last year when I made it my secondary duty weapon in favor of a Government model 38 super.

Mine is a 2006 I bought new that year in 45ACP and hardchrome. Very nice pistol. I put on aftermarket stocks in Desert Ironwood from Esmeralda on it. From a Ransom Rest it will give me sub 3 inch groups at 50 yards.
