The U-505 wasn't the first U-Boat captured during WWII...the British did earlier in the war. The U-505 was the first captured by the US Navy.

I dove on the U-352 with the NC scuba diving captain that found it. THAT was an experience.

One thing's for sure, US Navy ship classes have gotten bigger over time. A WWII destroyer was about 375 feet long, or less. A destroyer escort even smaller at about 300 ft. My Knox class was 438 feet long in the 70s and 80s and was called a DE or FF. The current Burke class DDs are 500 feet long, about as big as a WWII light cruiser!

Only four Fletcher Class destroyers have been preserved as museum ships, with only the USS Kidd never modernized and retaining her complete World War II configuration:

The USS Kidd ( DD661 )..My Grandfather's Tin Can

.
Shooter13, cool picture of the Kidd. For the last year of the war, my dad was the medical officer on the USS Black (DD666) a sister ship to the Kidd, and I remember him mentioning the Kidd a number of times, particularly regarding the invasion of Okinawa, and the Kamakaze attacks.

Best regards,

The USS KIDD Amateur Radio Club maintains a permanent amateur radio station on board using the ship's original HF wire antenna. I have had the good fortune to work W5KID for a gew special events. After your QSO with The Pirate of the Pacific, send your card and business-sized, SASE to the address above for a picture QSL and a brochure describing the ship.

I have the original soundtrack album for Das Boot. It was released on ATLANTIC RECORDS! How appropriate.

There is not a original idea in Hollywood. They keep remaking every old show and movie. Look at the Friday night line up on cbs. MacGyver then Hawaii 5 o and Magnum. Then I noticed with new tv show they recycle joke's from older show's. The odd couple was done three time's! Tony Randal and Jack Klugman were as good as Walter and Jack from the original movie. I guess all the creative funny men are all dead and gone! Boy I feel like a dinosaur! Now get off my lawn!

Trivia, when I was a boy during the war the farmer next to us was a German emigrant that was in the U-boats during world war one. Supposedly he was ship wrecked on some island for a long time.
He was vocally pro Germany during the war. I had a uncle
that "worked him over" because of it. My uncle was 82nd AB.

Ha! That'll learn him! My dad and his brother lived in Jacksonville, FL during the war. They could see burning ships at sea at night, and gathered wreckage off the beaches the next day. One time they hoisted a German flag over their fort that they played in. After a few hours the police showed up and came asking them questions. This wasn't that far from where the actual Nazi saboteurs had paddled ashore from their U-boat, and buried their rubber raft.
