Is the "leatherette" box the only correct one for that decade or could it be the woodgrain cardboard also?

They also used boxes like this one from 1952...

The box is similar to the basic Kraft box used during WWII... possibly Colt's found some left and decided to use them...

FWIW

So far as I know this box was only used on .45 Government Models. It is not clear if this box was used on general production guns or just on special order.l All the GMs I have seen with this box were made for the Connecticut National Guard... which raises questions in it's self.

If I'm correct, there is no reason he would mention it.

According to Sheldon "Colt's Super .38", the Leatherette hinged box (Style II) was used from late 1948 until late 1955. The 2 piece woodgrain telescopic box (Style III) was used from late 1955 until 1967. He made no mention of the Kraft style box mentioned by cxm357.
