I have a Colt 1911 gold cup bought in 1989 -- series 80 blue.

After sitting in my safe for about 20 years, I'm starting to shoot it again.

The ammo I've found is UMC 230 gr FMJ that comes in 250 rnd "magapacks".

My question is, should I get a different recoil spring, or is it OK to shoot this stuff?

I also have a Smith and Wesson 625 JM in 45 ACP and I can pretty much shoot anything in that revolver. But I'd like to shoot my Colt also.

But, like everyone else, I'm rather limited in what ammo I can find at reasonable prices.

Welcome to the forum. If your Gold Cup came with two springs, just use the heavier one. The lighter one is for light target loads. If you don't know what you have, get a new standard 16 pound spring to be safe. It'll work fine for the Remington loads.

Gold Cup- use 28 coil factory spring with wadcutters.
Gold Cup- use 32 coil factory spring with hardball loads.
