Saw this listed on Gun Broker.
Asked seller about serial #,he said 101714.
That puts it at 1916 as listed.
Seems to be a rebarrel /reblue.
What do you fellows think ?
well that gosh durn lighting issue rears it's ugly head again but..
the grips are the wrong size, badly fitted.
it looks like a re blue.
no pictures of the box.
The barrel is post-WWI while the frame is pre-WWI - so much for "This gun is BRAND NEW in original box and has never been fired and the cylinder never rotated". It may be refinished, but you sure can't tell from the photo.
What bugs me is I can't tell if this guy is just clueless, or malignant.
Not only is the barrel post WWI, by the front sight, it looks like one of the Post WWII replacements made well after New service production ended. I had a friend who re-barreled his with one like that he got new in the late 70's.
Asked seller about the grips and if he had more pics. He replied back that he was not sure if grips were plastic or wood.
No reply about more pictures tho.
Not sure about seller. He replied to my two questions fairly quickly. He has minimal feedback.
The reference to Jesus is a big red flag.
Sort of like
"Do not worry,I'm a religious person I'd never rip you off".
I too think the barrel is post WWII, but since I don't know what was engraved on the barrel, I couldn't be sure. That's why I called it post WWI since the barrel was bolstered, and I have seen at least one pre-WWII barrel with that front sight special-ordered. In any account, it was a parts gun as far as I'm concerned.
I'm no expert but for the money he is asking you would think he would provide some better pictures. By the way if that note is almost 100 Years old you would think that it would be a little more faded and yellowed.
I am still learning Colts, but here is a photo of my 1915 New Service. I was told that the Barrel was straight and with no taper during this period. Also, the grips on mine are correct for the period. Would Colt have made these changes from one year to the next???
Here's my 1916 .455 New Service (serial# 101506) - not the original stocks (lousy fit, since replaced by a better set of replica stocks) with a somewhat modified front sight. Pre-1952 or so, entered the British Commercial Handgun market.
This bidding on this item must stop until the historical accuracy of the information given to me is verified by Colt. Sorry for the inconvenience but is in the best interest of all parties involved.
Yes,it looks like the seller pulled the auction. So perhaps he is not of ill intent but only ignorant.
What is amazing is someone would bid it up to over 5gs with only 2 lousy pictures to look at !
More $$ than brains.......
