For those who haven't seen this already,
This was posted on another Forum. Pretty cool way to start your day. Grab a coffee and pull up a chair before heading out to shovel the snow-at least thats what is in store for me.......

Good grief, I see now why CMP charges so much. The video talks about the $1Mil that had to be spent on termite treatment of the M-1s coming back. Then $1.5Mil for asbestos removal. Then they had to lease a US ship for $3.2Mil that could not haul any OTHER cargo, just the M-1s. For 86,000 M-1s they got back from PI. I amend my prior comments that "they got them for free." What a nightmare of red tape, and millions spent to get them back into the US. I'm sure when we loaned them out for 50 years there were no such issues.

Azshot, if I do the math it comes out to $101.16 each. Then they clean them up and fix them and auction off the best of the lot. So in the end the CMP is making money although I suck at math and I could be wrong:confused: I believe the lowest Garand sells for $650. Multiply that by 86,000 and you have $55,900,000! Now that's quite the number:rolleyes:

The MI- Greatest battle rifle ever according to Georgie Patton!

Thanks for posting good info.

Watching "The Big Red One" movie- the reconstructed version*, with Lee Marvin.

Its good no P/C with a lot of M1 action- Marvin sure knew how to handle a rifle.

* The original theatrical release version of the movie- was kind of a dog.

Most of us can relate to serving in uniform and that era of fighting using America's Battlerifle. Of course I personally spent my early years in the Marines storming beaches from landing craft carrying the M16 and my battle gear. I have my collection of a M1A(M14) and assorted M4 Carbines and rifles. However I do intend to buy a M1 from CMP later in the upcoming year. There are modern Battle Rifles today, but owning America's M1 Garand is a must have and shooting one is the best time to be had. I bought one from CMP decades ago, but let my little brother have it, so now it's time to get another. I've watched that video many times and enjoyed it very much.

Went through Marine Boot Camp with a M14 back in 1963, when we went to Camp Lejeune for ITR and ACT we were issued M1's.
I have since bought 2 M1's, from the CMP. My Springfield is from the mid 50's with all correct Springfield parts Service Grade $420.
My H&R is a mixmaster parts gun, but came to me Arsenal Refinished, never reissued CMP Select grade $570, (had to wait almost 2 years for CMP to find one of these)
Glad to see so many M1's available again, great piece of history, fun to shoot and show off.

A M1 reminds me of Sgt. Stryker...a Thompson brings images of Sgt. Saunders, a M1 Carbine images of Lt. Hanley and a BAR images of Cpl. Kirby.
