You 'do' understand that Cap'n Gus MacRae from 'Lonesome Dove' notwithstanding, the Walker was carried in pommel holsters.

That's why they were referred to as 'Horse Pistols' and 'Saddle Pistols' and not 'Belt Pistols', and by comparison, the Model 1860 Army was like toting around a D-Frame with a long barrel.

Men of the time were far smaller than now, and it takes a helluva serious belt to hold one of these up - even for the behemoths of this era.
That was the point I was making in an earlier post...'
