I know it's a Colt DA38.

Could you tell me what markings to look for (and where to look) to help me better ID it?

Thanks! This is my first gun. It was given to me by my Grandfather.

We'll need more information in order to help. Let us know what the stamping on the barrel says, and enough of the serial number, such as 1234XX, so that we can date it for you. Also, give us a complete description of the revolver with barrel length, etc.
