The Government Model slides had the tempered front end beginning in 1925, and the Model 1911A1 beginning in 1937. The slide stop notch was not hardened on the 1911A1 until mid 1943.
Supposedly Colt would reject a Government Model slide if the color difference in the tempered area was too great. The tempered area tended to show up darker under a phosphate finish as on the phosphate finished 1911A1, and as well the tempered small parts tended to show up darker.
