What goes well with guns? Well knives of course

Jim Behring, aka Treemanknives.com is a friend and local (Ray, MI) custom knifemaker. For years Jim has developed the skill of making Scagel Style Knives into an art form. William Scagel is considered one of the best custom knife makers and a true pioneer.

Over the last few years Jim has been applying the same talent to making tactical/combat style knives; and there are several active military special operations units out there that are using his knives. They are beefy and purpose built. The latest is his LRRP Spearpoint; double edged, with or without top serrations. I ordered one of these knives and was pleasantly surprised to see that the US Postal Service actually delivered the 1 day delivery package on Sunday, waiting for me when I came home from work. It's big...6" x1-3/4" wide double edged spearpoint made with 1/4" O1 steel. Jim forges his blades in his shop and does all the work himself. On a side note, his son, Jim Behring Jr. lives out west and is an accomplished knife maker as well.

Here is the beast:

At risk of being ubiquitious, show & tell again. I have scores of knives but none of modern makers, but a few nice oldies. Here at top a family heirloom captured in the Civil War that spent is later use-life butchering hogs. Middle is English made with Mexican eagle. Below Tiffany NY, of collector interest to Tiffany folk as well as knife community.

Well I have many many knives, I collected blades before I ever owned my first gun. I will not bore the members with my pics because I can get carried away. I always pair my carry piece with a blade that is complimentary. My wife laughs at me because I will spend some time picking out the right knife to go with the handgun. That knife in the post is very sweet blade. Me thinks I should order one to add to the collection. Thanks for posting the pics and information. RHMC your vintage blades are beautiful brother. Peace.
rhmc - very nice collectible knives - if only they could tell us everything!

Blademan - my gun addiction started out after I became addicted to knife collecting and selling. My second wife is a scrimshander so we started by going to knife shows in Ohio and Michigan. Now its me and my current wife going to the ocassional knife show to try to sell some knives. This upcoming weekend it will be a one day show (Saturday) in Clawson, MI.
Yep, they go well together.....

Well, I wish my wife shared my love of edged weapons and guns. But alas she does not, thank God her love for me is strong enough to keep her by my side for 29 years come this October. I started collecting as a young boy. Pocket knives, was where I started. Back then you could buy a pocket knife at the corner store for around 25 cents. There was a lock smith in town that carried "Case" knives, a bit more money but it was an allowance well spent for me. I have gone through many phases of blade collecting, Italian stilettos, tacticals, fixed blades, daggers, etc.... At the present I only buy what catches my eye, that could be a modern knife or a vintage blade. I have thinned out some of the collection, there were way to many knives then I had space to properly store them. The knives that I carry day to day are also the knives that I train with. I still occassionally teach some self defense classes for a friend of mine. Tactical blade deployment, and carry seem to be very popular. So many people today can be seen wearing a blade by the tell tale "pocket clip" , but many have no idea how to deploy the blade in an emergency. I teach folding knife, and fixed blade tactics, give people some examples of blades that are available, and what size will work best etc......It gives me a chance to share my "addiction" to edged weapons with people that are truly interested in the proper use of a knife in an urban enviorment.

Here's my favorite pair of knives; appropriately called The Bears, made by my friend Fred Rowe of Bethel Ridge Forge (Ohio); sheaths by Sandy Morrissey, scrimshaw by Dianne McAlonan (ex-wife), and the photograph by Terrill Hoffman, one of several very talented knife photographers out there.
