What year?

Hey everyone,
I’m new to this forum, my grandfather passed away not too long ago and left me a few of his revolvers. One of them was a Colt Police Positive .38 Special, I’m trying to find out what year this gun was manufactured. The serial number on the bottom says “No. A 3966”. Anything useful is highly appreciated.
Thanks,
D

That isn't the serial number. Open the cylinder and the serial number is on the frame behind the crane.

The number in your picture is likely an inventory number for a police department or similar.

Gotcha! I’ll check it out when I get home. Thank you.

When you look it up on Proofhouse, if it;s a .38 Special, look it up as a "Police Positive Special" and not a "Police Positive." They are different revolvers but some have the same serial numbers.
