I have a 1975 DS and would like to buy a set of Pachmayr Compac grips. Not that it really matters, but I'm curious when those were offered as an option from Colt; does anyone here know? Also, were the medallions silver or gold (or perhaps both depending on the year, etc.)? I believe that only Pythons got gold medallions, but that is for wood grips and a different frame size, so that "rule" likely has no application to D-frames. Thanks!

I have Compacs with silver and gold medallions. I've no idea when they became optional or primarily a factory aftermarket purchase item. The only D-frame I'm sure they came standard on was the Police Positive Mark V...and then I can't remember if mine came with silver or gold medallions. I replaced the ones on my PP Mark V with Colt/Pachmayr Presentation grips.

I seem to remember the Pachmayr Compacs being available with Colt medallions in the early 70's at least.
These had Gold medallions.

I don't recall seeing any silver medallions on Compacs until around the 1995 reissue Detective Special.
The Colt Commando Special of the mid-80's had non-Compac rubber grips made expressly for Colt and these had silver medallions.

So, for your 1975 DS, you need Pachmayr Compacs with gold medallions.
