The US govt required the larger OD at the frame on the 1909 for the military. During the Trials of 1907 one of the test guns had the barrel come loose during test firing and when the 1909 was ordered for the Phillipines it was stipulated that the larger boss be added to the barrels........

The 1909 Army, Navy, and Marine Corp all had the straight barrels. and they look the same as the commercial barrels except for being marked Colt DA 45 and United State Property on the Army model. I measured the ones I have and they are the same diameter at the frame as pre 1909 barrels.

When the Model 1909 was ordered all the barrels were straight. As indicated above, the Model 1917 Revolver was the first New Service to be fitted with the barrel bolster.
