Winchester Model 88

I just posted this somewhere else and thought i'd show it here again. A pre 64 Winchester Model 88 in .284 Winchester caliber. These were only made one year prior to 1964 but continued on after that. Post 64 Model 88s have the basketweave checkering. I had a .308 and saw no difference in quality of the guns whatsoever. These carried 4 rounds but there's a 10 round magazine. And the short action .284 round next to a .30-06 for comparison. The .284 was like a short action .270, or .280, really. A very nice rifle but I much prefer the Savage 99 to these, though. This is the only rifle I own with a detachable mag.

I bought my .308 mod 88 from 1972 simply because it said Winchester. I agree in liking the Savage 99 better. Would like to have one of those 10 shot mags though.

I use a pre 64 .358 model 88 yearly to hunt deer, it is very accurate and a great bush gun. Where did you get the 10 round mag?

I love the Winchester Model 88 in .308! I got a deal on one in 1974 and shot a deer that weekend and I haven't parted with it since. Target NATO round bandoleers were easy to come by during my M60 service days of qualification shooting.

I have a early model 88 in .308. I also could use a ten round magazine.

The M-88 in .284 is very difficult to find and they always bring a premium. I had one years ago and traded it off.

It's an aftermarket clip called the "Colyer Clip". The rifle was my dad's favorite and I don't know when he got the Colyer mag. He also had one in .243/.308 and I sold it before joining this forum years ago. There's a bunch of them on Ebay.

In any caliber, the action is short and very smooth. It is a great lever action but I think the detachable box mag was the turn off to some, but not me.

If you do a little research, you'll find that unlike most Winchesters, the post 64 88 was considered a better gun.
I have one in 308, many years ago I read an article about someone in Alaska having their 308 rebored into a 338/308, which later became the 338 Federal. Well I just had to do that and here it is with a new stock from Fajen.
It likes my reloads better than the factory 338 Federal, but for hunting purposes both work well.
As far as a Savage 99, (the one I have was a first year 358) they both have their plus/minus. I think the 88 is a better looking rifle, but the 99 has a much nicer trigger.

I've known a few fellows that have owned M-88's and loved them, I don't think I ever even held one.
Threads presently open on two of my favorite Winchesters, the 75 Sporter and the 88. I'll post the 75 on that thread.

Here is my 88 in .308.

I am not left handed, but one nice thing about the 88 for those who shoot left handed is no need to mess with the bolt.

Also on the 88, the safety is easily switched to LH,

Nice! And in what I'd consider the most practical caliber for most uses. In 1983 I saw a post 64 .308 in the paper classifieds for $275 and bought it. Then later I owed my dad about that much money for something and gave him the rifle. I was laid off and broke at the time. It just sat in his gun rack until he died in 2008. Since it wasn't sentimental I sold it for $600 to a guy at work. He was giving it to a nephew for a college graduation present. So it is now a sentimental heirloom, recycled in another family. It makes me feel good how that works.

I also have a 1925 99G in 300 Savage. It took a deer this year. (No pics.)

Very nice. When did the oak leaf on the stock sides over the checkering begin/end?
