Wondering about an Official Police

I saw an Official Police today at the range/gun store. It had a scratch on the cylinder but only a trace of a turn line. The only obvious wear was on the top of the front sight. The single action trigger pull was soo smooth and light. Unfortunately [I think] the owner's name, date of birth and date of death were engraved [laser I think] on the fight side plate. He was a Georgia native and I found the two dates online. It had the original grips and a 4" barrel. I didn't write down the serial # but the last character was a J. What would you pay for this piece? How would it compare to my Metropolitan MK III as a shooter and for value?

Wow!!! Then it's REALLY overpriced. Thanks.
That is me, someone else may disagree. there is one without someones initials gracing it's form in about the same condition here at a LGS for 380.00
I got the Metropolitan for $400+, and that is the range I'm willing to dabble in. It's my only Colt [except for the Magnum Carry that I bought new in 1998], and I'm wondering what to look for in that price range. I want a revolver to shoot regularly and have no inclination to be a "collector". Suggestions? TIA. (The LGS had a price of $600 on the OP mentioned above.)
Smith and Wesson model 10 heavy barrel would be my pick in that price range
I paid around 320.00 for mine. They don't usually bring much. The personalized engraving would bother me. However, as you noticed, the actions are fabulous. Very well made albeit basic revolver.
I came real close to buying a beautiful pre war Official Police on Sunday. It had a 5" barrel in .38 special and some d*** fools social security number inscribed on the grip frame. Deal breaker. :(
The gun you discribe is worth 350+ anywhere. But yours sounds like a 38 cal toombstone.
By all means you must own and shoot a Colt Official Police in any flavor they are all very well made revolvers. I much rather shoot a 5" O.P. than a S&W Mdl 10 they just feel better in my hand. O.P and Army Special are amazingly intuitive revolvers, fabulous platform for .38 Special wonderful hand built double action(pre war) $600.00 or less will get you a very nice pre war shooter on the various gun auction web sites or look around good deals on nice O.P.'s are out there.

Here's a screaming deal on a 4" the stocks are worth at least half of the asking price, nice full checkered stocks.

Very appropriate, a tombstone.

Well, I already have a M64, which is basically a M10 in SS, and a M66 and a M67. The 1st is a snubbie for carry and the other two are 4". I'm just thinking I would like another Colt to take to the range. I was looking at a Border Patrol some months ago, but that was also overpriced. Maybe a Trooper will appear.
I think some of you are referring to the Official Police E frame and an Official Police MKIII J frame. 2 totally different guns. I think the original poster and serial number ending in J, he is referring to an Official Police MKIII and not the original Official Police. Is this correct corgicolt?
Here is my Official Police MKIII J frame first year production made in 1969. Butter smooth action and as sturdy as you will find in a .38 Special. Is this the gun in question?

This.

With the "J" at the end of the serial number, it seems like it might be the MKIII model?
Yes, that is the revolver I'm asking about.

Other than the skinnier barrel, it's the same gun as your Metro. I sure wouildn't pay $600 for one with someone's info scratched into it.

Hmmm. Now that I did not realize. So I guess if I want another Colt the Trooper might be the one to look for, or a Border Patrol. I assume all the "snakes" are significantly more expensive.
Very funny.

You can't buy a nice Cobra Official Police around here for $150 (or any other nice Colt revolver).
