Man aint that the story for every one? I saw Terry mention earlier today that he'd missed a nice engraved gun because he came back at the end of a show and the dealer was packing up and refused to dig out the gun Terry had passed on earlier in the day. Bummer there. But I've also had bad shows. But never one so bad I wasn't able to unpack and sell a gun if asked! That is crazy stuff
This story is along the same lines. And what turned out to be a surprise ending even for me!
Back in 2018 (?) I believe it was one of the Winchester SHOT show special offerings as a limited edition. Not just any '73 mind you but a Deluxe Sporting Model 1873.

Model 1873 Deluxe Sporting (winchesterguns.com) (great photos)
Well if you are a Winchester guy and like 1873s, the Deluxe Sporting has to be on your list to, at least fondle and look at, if not shoot. Sheesh even Bill Cody had at last one back in the day. Short of a 1of 100 or a 1 of 1000, the Deluxe Sporting rifle was the best Winchester had to offer in a '73. The 1873 Special Sporter or Deluxe Sporter cost almost to the dollar exactly double what a standard 1873 would cost you in 1899.
There is more but I need to give a fellow member here a friendly shout out. Longranger was smart enough to get one earlier and generously write up some reviews with photos of his rifle previous.

Before anyone gets into it
I have an original 1890s '73 rifle. Family gun that came from Texas to California in a wagon. Nice gun that I inherited as a kid. Which in turn encouraged me to buy a Uberti '73 30+ years ago. Now I have a rack full of Ubertis, half of them '73s in differing flavors. And one modern Miroku '73 carbine. Of all the tricked out and custom '73s I own and have shot a lot with, I think the dang near box stock Miroku '73 is the better gun. And that includes any one of my full on custom Ubertis...with new match grade barrels (yes I did get serious about my '73s) and 3rd Gen short strokes guns.
Just assume that the Winchester Miroku actions are really, really good with just minor tuning. Because they really are!
So what makes the Deluxe Sporting so neat?!
Eventually I'll have a range report, but frankly this one was bought mostly to fondle
Fingers crossed that the wood I get is truly Grade VI. Some are, some are not.
The story behind "you snooze, you loose"? As a SHOT Show Special in 2017, the guns started being delivered in 2018 and were immediately selling for a premium over the the $1849.00 msrp. By the time the prices had dropped to a more reasonable $1400 or $1500 the supply had dwindled to almost nothing. The few guns I did see in that lower price range sold quickly. I kept putting off the purchase knowing full well I had no need for another '73 of any sort. Then the guns simply seemed to have disappeared off the market all together . No word if Winchester ever intends to build them again. I'd suspect not for that price as they were expensive guns to build in 1899, let alone today. A similar rifle in 1899 would have cost $35.50, when a normal '73 was only $19.50. In today's money that would make $35.50 a $1114.08 rifle price. I've seen them recently for $2500+. I'm not willing to pay that kind of premium!
More to come once this one shows up at my gate.
Dang it! This is not how I had hoped this would turn out.
I had hoped to pass along the dealer info who I had thought had a few of these in stock. But I just checked again as I was typing this....sadly, they are now listed as "out of stock, no back order"! Not so funny really, but you snooze, you loose!
