As far as I know, the 38Spl Targets 8" were all 1980.

IIRC , around 3500 blued ,and 251 bright nickels were made.

LNIB /NIB blued have some increased collector value over std 8" 357 blued.

A nice nickel Target, especially NIB, has significantly increased collector value.

Not aware of any Targets with red or orange insert front sight.
The factory scoped hunting 8" Pythons, a different story.

Actually I believe you can subtract 200 from the blued and 50 from the nickel numbers. That’s how many Ed Faust of Pacific International had advertised as being made into the California Combat 3 inch Pythons. Not sure if all were made, but most were if not. I’d lean towards all being made as they come up quite often. All 38 targets would date to 1980, no later than 1981 as far as I know. All 38 targets were 8 inchers also. At one time you couldn’t hardly give one away just like the k-32 smiths. My uncle said he once saw a man trade 2 k-32s for one model 19. How times change!

New models? There are at least 7 versions of the new Cobra, at least 4 new King Cobra and 6” and 4.25” new Python.
I’ve shot the standard stainless cobra, KC target and both pythons. They all shoot good. Not necessarily better than the older models in my opinion.

Most of the Colts I own haven’t been fired so I cannot tell you how my python target shoots.

Is this python target yours? If so, you should post more pics of it including the sticker on the box. Do you have the original front sight? Can you post pics without the scope?

Awesome, I love it. You are quite the python guy....Yep, I just inherited this target model from my grandpa a couple months ago along with the rest of his collection. Now I can’t get enough of these colts.. I am fully immersed in them. I shot this for the first and probably last time the other day. Trigger is insane. I will post more pics by tomorrow. I am not sure I have the original sights. Have to look through the parts box. I don’t have the original box It came in unfortunately, just the manual. I know he did buy this brand new in 1979 or 1980

I am on the bottom rung when it comes to “python guys” on this site. My knowledge of pythons and colts in general is a fraction of what most people here know.
Ive only been collecting colts and rugers for 3-4 years and recently kind of dabbling in s&w. There are guys here with a life time of knowledge who are ready and excited to share it to people like us.

I bought an 8" nickel Python Target in 1980 - Kittery Trading Post. Had to listen to a whole lot of "who buys a Python in 38 Special?" comments. Never much used it, could swear it has a Patridge type blade front sight and not the usual ramp. Will have to check next time I'm at home. Left it in MA when I "temporarily" landed in CA. My 89 year old Mom used it to qualify for her MA LTC. She and an equally ancient next door neighbor used to trade off using it as their home defense gun. About once a year they passed it over the fence to each other, still in the box. Mom has since been relegated to an older High Standard Sentinel.
