Does anyone have a recommendation on what the best method is to mount a red dot on my 1911 ?

Does your 1911 already have the cutout? Factory or custom cut? One thing I've found is most of the commercial products are junk and the quality companies are coming through as the few leaders in this area. Things such as the grade screws included, etc. One example - the Trijicon RMR is one of the best going. Their included mounting screws are junk and will twist apart in your gun. One of the leaders in mounting plates, hardware packs as well as the actual mount cutting and installation is CH Precision. They are one of the few that we allow as a duty option for anyone carrying their gun on duty. I've had them repair my gun, install new items and just bought their products with no regrets. Great customer service. I messed up one of my guns and called them to have it sent in for repair. They accepted it, fixed it and mailed it back. I tried to pay but they refused. They said "it's what we do".

Not sure I know what you mean by "Does your 1911 already have the cutout?". My pistol is a stock Colt Gold Cup Trophy. It has had some trigger work done to it but no external modification. I use it only for target, I have other pistols for carry.

I have a Pardini .22LR Bullseye pistol with an Ultradot but that pistol came from the factory with grooves milled for mounting the red dot. The Pardini is configured differently than the 1911 and the barrel is rigid and doesn't cycle with the bolt on firing.

I was thinking about using the same kind of scope on my 1911. I see from the C&H web site that they may be able to machine grooves on my slide to provide mounting a scope like this. I'm not sure that a red dot scope would be durable enough mounted on the slide of a .45acp Gold Cup. I was hoping someone with experience with this could give me some advice. Will the scope hold up if I mount it on the slide? Would a frame mount be better? What are others using?

Ljohns - it seems you're talking more about the older mounts that attach to the frame (dustcover holes with screws and sometimes trigger guard clamps) and bend up over the slide to mount a larger optic to? That style is pretty much gone by the way side in favor of slide mounted smaller red dots like the Trijicon RMR, Leopold Delta, Holosun and more. Same concept, much smaller profile and as much or more reliable. I'd do some more research to confirm what you're looking for first. There's a good chance they can cut the mounting space in your Gold Cup, but then you'd also be cutting up a Gold Cup. hhhmmm

What's your intended purpose? Just range time and punching holes in paper? Carrying it? Personally, before cutting up a Gold Cup, I'd just look for another gun that's already got the cutout mount and go from there. Sadly, Colt doesn't offer up any pistols yet with that done. Ed Brown, Nighthawk, STI, Wilson, Sig Sauer and Springfield all offer factory guns...I'm sure there's others as well...

As an example, here's my Wilson with a Trijicon RMR red dot.

Thanks Tom. I appreciate the input.

I'm looking to just target shoot with it. I never liked the looks of those wrap around frame mounts but they looked like they would be easier on the red dot than something mounted directly to the slide. The Pardini distributer is located here in Tampa and he has recommended the Ultradot for bullseye work over the smaller sights. That's what the Pardini factory shooting team uses so he is more familiar with them and doesn't profess to know anything about the Colts.

I have 3 of the Gold Cups so I don't mind machining one of their slides if that is best. Or, I could buy an additional slide that has the rails cut in it already. I just haven't had enough experience to know if that is the best approach.
