It does looks like it's seen some use. The blued sides of the hammer are a give away that the gun has been re-blued. Colt hammers had the sides left in the white on all D/A revolver's until the Mark III series.

I have a 1917 with the SN #1925xx, with the Butt #46459. According to the Colt Factory Letter, it was standard issue in all ways, and shipped out to the C.O. at Springfield, MA, on March 28, 1918, in a lot of 2,400 just like it. It is still strictly WWI GI, with the thin bluing; but the grips are the just post-war style, wooden checkered, with slightly raised silver Colt medallions. (Correct, proper SN in thin pencil inside.) Inherited from the family of a Marine who served in the Dominican Republic in the early 1920's. Those grips look like they've been on there for a long time, and the Rampant Colt stamp on the gun is ever-so-lighter than mint. Any information? -Bert Barnett

I'm sure it did not come out of the factory with those grips on it. What does the letter say about the grips?

As far as I know, none of the Military shipped ones had checkered grips, only plain. Somebody must have added those along the way. Nice 1917 though. I see the inspector stamp on the upper frame by the hammer.

The Model 1917 Colt revolvers had a very rough final polish, but the revolver shown appears to have more of a commercial finish.

Check under the left grip for a G stamped in the frame. Should be there for Government/Military contract 1917's.

Yup, as does mine, along with about 5 or 6 other various stamps hidden under the grip area. Those guys were meticulous. None of them are a big X, by the way...

"G" for mine too, along with a few numbers -- all on the left side. A previous owner had ordered a Colt letter which was included when I purchased it.

I know this most recent post is a month old, and the original goes back much longer but rather that start a new one...I thought I would inquire here. To be honest, for the life of me, I thought I had posted this before, but cannot locate it. So here we go again.....
Colt 1917....#on the crane is 234852. #on the butt 85 over 829.

Can someone tell me when it was manufactured/where it was shipped?

The info I have shows your M1917 #85829 was delivered to the Army at Camp Jackson, Columbia, S.C. on July 15,1918 in a shipment of 500 revolvers.

I don't know exactly, but that is a late one. I think the last shipment was in Feb, 1919. Yours is probably Jan-Feb 1919. Somebody will come along that knows exactly.

The information I have has a break between Number 148400 and 151801.
148351-148400 50 M1917s were shipped to Camp Greene, in Charlotte, N.C. on Jan 6, 1919.
151801-154800 3000 M1917s were shipped to the Army Reserve depot, South Schenectady, N.Y. on
Feb 19, 1919 (60 cases, nos 3037-3096).
So it seems yours falls between these two deliveries at the at the very end of the contract in late January and early February 1919. I'm not sure why these 3400 M1917s were not recorded.
Anyone else got a answer?
