The Colt Collector’s Association Special Editions of the Single Action Army

Since its formation in 1980, the Colt Collector’s Association has contracted with Colt’s Manufacturing Company three times to produce “special editions” of their Single Action Army revolvers for exclusive sale to members. These Special Editions incorporated 4 ¾ inch barreled revolvers in two calibers in a variety of finishes and with a wide range of special features. Here is a summary of what I have been able to find out about these interesting guns.

1983 CCA Special Edition
: The very first mention of this special edition was made by Don Wilkerson on page 16 of the CCA newsletter dated March 1983 under “New from Colt in 1983”. He wrote “Four Colt Special Editions based on the Model P will be available in 1983. The Colt Collectors Association P-1941 revolver. Details on this Special Edition with be presented in a special mailing.” At introduction, the price of these revolvers was $800 each which included an offer for a free Archive letter.
I don’t know what Wilkerson meant by “Four Colt Special Editions…..”; as no mention of options for this edition appears in any work that I know of and I’ve never seen the “special mailing” itself.
CCA Treasurer Tommy Rholes had a paragraph on page 2 of the September 1983 issue of the CCA newsletter stating that 40 of these revolvers were still available for sale and the current price was $875.
As later described by Wilkerson on page 268 in his book “The Post-War Colt Single-Action Revolver 1976-1986” (1St Edition, 1986, Taylor Publishing Company), the revolver was a Colt Model P1941CCA, .44-40 caliber, 4 ¾ inch barrel, nickel finish with special lacquered walnut stocks checkered in fleur-de-lis pattern with nickel Rampant Colt medallions. Two- line address roll mark on the top of the barrel. Unique “COLT COLLECTOR SPECIAL EDITION” roll mark on left side of barrel and “COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER” on the right side. The right side of the frame below the cylinder was pantographed number “xxx of 250”. A presentation case was included with the revolver and was made of heavy oak with dark green velvet lining, French fitted and with a presentation plate inside which was etched with a floral design and suitable for an inscription. The approximate serial numbers of these revolvers were in the range of SA65xxx to SA66xxx.
In the June 1984 issue of the CCA newsletter on page 5, Don Wilkerson had an advertisement for double gun cases made specifically for this CCA Special Edition. He wrote that construction of these cases was identical to the single case as shipped with the revolvers but was sized to hold two 4 ¾ inch barreled revolvers. The price at the time was $175.
Finally, there was an advertisement in the March 1985 CCA newsletter on page 11 from Dick Atkinson (Pittsburg KS) for a limited number of this special edition gun. The artwork accompanying the ad is very interesting and, except for a few details, closely matches the guns themselves. The drawings are specifically attributed to Ben Lane, Jr. This ad also appeared in at least one later issue of the newsletter.
I found an article about Master Engraver Ben Lane Jr. on pages 4-6 in the Fall 1996 issue of the RAMPANT COLT magazine written by Joe Kiser. Lane was described as the designer of this special edition Colt and was selected to be the principal engraver for the CCA annual show/auction guns for 1996 and 1998.
Since these drawings existed, you would think the CCA would have used them in the initial advertisement offerings to promote interest and sales. And they may have, in the special mailing mentioned by Don Wilkerson (see above); however, I have been unable to locate a copy of that mailing.
Even though as many as 250 of these revolvers may have been made, they don’t seem to come up for sale very often. One did sell in October 2023 for $3300. That one included everything: gun, gun box, case, shipping box and extensive paperwork including the Archive letter. The serial number was SA660xx (#178 of 250) and it was shipped December 14, 1983.

1984 Colt Classic Special Edition: The first mention of this Special Edition was in the December 1984 Colt Collector’s Association newsletter in Don Wilkerson’s “Colt Corner” column on page 3. I quote Wilkerson’s description here: “A Colt Model P with special features and at a special price was offered ONLY at the show to CCA members. This revolver was available with or without a case, a choice of stocks and as a single or in pairs. Each revolver will come with a factory letter – delivery in December or January 1985.” The Colt Custom Shop made this Special Edition available to CCA members at the 5th Annual All Colt Show held in Kansas City MO, October 1984.
Wilkerson wrote about them again in the September 1985 issue of the CCA newsletter in his column on page 3. I quote: “For our 1984 All Colt Show the Colt Custom Shop made available to CCA members a special Model-P revolver. This special offer was in effect only during the show and featured a quality revolver at substantial savings. The offer consisted of a Model-P revolver in the “classic” design. The “basic” model was a .45 caliber revolver with a 4 ¾ inch barrel, nickel finish and rosewood stocks. The revolver featured a black powder type frame with the “Rampant Colt’ engraved behind the hammer and an engraved panel for initials on the back strap (see photo below). To this “basic” model several options could be added: ivory stocks, initials on the backstrap, or a case. Consecutively numbered pairs were also available. Fourteen revolvers were subsequently ordered – four consecutive sets and six singles. Two of the single revolvers were serialized one number apart and completed on the same Custom Shop number.”
The following description was included in Wilkerson’s book on page 267 (The Post-War Colt Single-Action Revolvers 1976-1986, Taylor Publishing 1986, first edition).
Colt Classic Special Edition with black powder style frame, .45 caliber, 4 ¾ inch barrel, nickel finish, rosewood stocks with silver medallions or ivory stocks with silver medallions. This revolver featured an engraved Rampant Colt behind the hammer and an engraved panel for initials on the back strap. A number of options were available.
Variations were to be as follows:
Consecutive sets 4 (8 revolvers)
Single Revolvers 6
Revolvers with rosewood stocks 10
Revolvers with smooth ivory stocks 2
Revolvers with checkered ivory stocks 2
Consecutive sets, cased 2
Single revolvers, cased 2
I spoke with Albert Brichaux about these Classic Edition guns in June 2020 and he was able to find some paperwork relating to them via the Custom Shop Order Number. There was no engraver named in association with these guns, and Mr. Brichaux’s conclusion was that they were machine engraved (pantographed), probably by apprentice or journeyman engravers working at Colt.
A pair of these guns with smooth ivory grips, consecutive serial numbers (SA68xxx serial number range), original boxes and a double gun presentation case were sold for $13,000 in 2021. This may seem high for a pair of guns that were not more heavily embellished. However, the guns appeared to be in as-new condition and it was the ONLY consecutive pair in this configuration with plain ivory grips.
Another consecutive pair in the same serial number range was sold in 2023 for $14,000. The only difference between this pair and the previous one was that this pair had checkered ivory grips instead of plain ivory. An Archive letter was included that stated the guns were shipped on July 24, 1985. A double case was included but only one shipping box for one of the guns. This was another unique pair (checkered ivory vs. smooth ivory) and in as-new condition. If the numbers quoted above are correct, these two pairs accounted for the ONLY Classic Edition guns with ivory grips.

Colt Classic Edition Consecutive Pair
This pair sold in 2021 for $13,000. The original gun boxes were included and a double case that may or may not have been original.

Colt Classic Edition Prototype

A gun described as a prototype of the Colt Classic Edition was offered for sale on GunBroker in September 2023. It was Model Number P2841Z (Black Powder Frame), serial number SA674xx, 4 3/4 inch, 44-40 caliber with nickel and gold finish, minimal engraving on cylinder and muzzle, smooth two-piece blind screw ivory grips with gold medallions, original box, display case and Archive letter. The label on the box also had a square white and yellow sticker on it printed "#81 BPF". Colt Archive letter and display case were included. The letter indicated the gun was shipped on July 25, 1984. It was sold for $9000 .
The purchaser of this gun listed it for sale again on GunBroker in November 2023. No display case was mentioned or shown in the photos. This time it sold for $15,525. The gun was described in the Archive letter to be a prototype of the Colt Classic Edition, but those guns had little in common with this one. About the only thing that was the same was the barrel length and pantographed engraving of the Colt logo and inscription panel on the back strap. Nonetheless, it was a unique gun.

Colt Collectors Association 1992 Hartford Special Edition
This model was first announced on page 25 of THE RAMPANT COLT magazine for Spring of 1993. (The Colt Collectors Association newsletter became THE RAMPANT COLT magazine with the December 1989 issue.)
It was described as “One of 250” Single Action Army revolver, .38/40 W.C.F. Caliber with these features: cross pin design; 4 ¾-inch barrel, blue w/case color frame, gate and hammer; beveled and fluted cylinder; black plastic or plain walnut stocks; barrel marked .38 W.C.F. and small two-line address on top; Colt’s Mfg. Co. serial number on frame, CCA 1-250 of 250 on butt. Base price was to be $1000 with a non-refundable $300 deposit due with order.
Options available were: custom walnut case; ivory, stag, or fleur de lis checkered walnut stocks; nickel or full royal blue finish; engraving and/or gold inlays.
The Archive letters on these guns also indicate that the presentation case would have the CCA logo on the outside of the lid. Back strap inscriptions were also available.
Under “Remarks” the Archive letters also state: “This edition was produced expressly for the membership of the Colt Collectors Association and first offered at the 1992 annual meeting which was held in Hartford, Connecticut and hosted by Colt’s Manufacturing Company”.
Another interesting item is that all the early descriptions say that this would be a run of 250 guns, but the Archive letters say they were “xxx of 150”. And the guns are marked that way. Apparently, Colt decided to cut it short at 150 guns, possibly because of insufficient orders.

CCA 1992 Special Edition #2 of 150 (optional Class “C” standard scroll engraving).
Shipped August 24, 1994

This gun has kind of an interesting history. When researching this revolver, I found that it was sold at auction in 2009 and the estimated value was $1200 to $1800. I was unable to discover the hammer price. At that time, the Archive letter verified two-piece walnut grips with silver medallions, class “C” standard scroll engraving and the original box was included but no case was mentioned.
In 2022, the gun was sold again and asking price was $6950. In this sale it was wearing blind screw ivory grips with gold medallions, and had the lift-off type blue box but no white outer sleeve. The seller claimed “Master Engraving” and that “only the first five guns of this issue were engraved”. The seller was almost certainly mistaken about both because the Archive letter says “standard scroll engraving” and there is no mention of special treatment of the first five guns.
Finally, the gun sold in 2023 for $5550. At that time, it had the black eagle grips (both of which are marked inside with the last three numerals of the serial number) and the original serial numbered box (blue inside box and white sleeve). Again, no case was included.

Colt 1992 Special Edition 113 of 150 (options of nickel finish and ivory grips)

Image

Options on this revolver were nickel finish and ivory grips which were one-piece and not “blind screw” or standard two piece. The gun was offered for sale with the original serial numbered box, and a non-original case with glass top. Asking price was $5000. No archive letter was included and the label on the outer box stated ivory grips but did not specifically call out the type (one-piece, blind screw or regular two-piece).

I find these CCA Special Edition Single Action Army revolvers quite interesting. The options offered and selected by the customers indicate the wide variety of interests of individual Colt collectors. Also, some of these are quite scarce and well worth watching for on the “used gun” market.
