It came with the 'cheezy' fake pearls which I replaced with the Buffalo bone grips. Naturally, I saved the original grips
with the gun. I have no real attachment to it. It was just another 'good deal.'

I like the 38 Super. Own 12 in all. Missed the first, El Presidente, and quit collecting the series when it started to get silly.

This is what I have in the El series.

El Coronel
El Tenente
El Dorado
El Jefe
El General
El Patron
El Capitan
El Campeon
El Commandante

All but 3 are the same serial number, darn it!

Hot damn that's a beast of a start to a serious collection. What got you "addicted" to them to start with? They are slowly wearing on me.....

Wow! That's some loot in the EL series.

OHIO - I know you'll get there too, if you want .

Terry , good word " cheezy " - agreed as is snake eyes - wouldn't kick em outta my sleepin bag though .
nice upgrade with the bone . I searched for the Angels scene for an hour , close but no cigar . I'm gonna have to Netflix.

Although the 38 Super is popular in Mexico and on this side of the border it is by no means legal within the Republic of Mexico for civilian ownership! In fact when applying for permission to legally purchase a handgun within the Mexican SEDENA gun control system the form you fill out says (basically) "don't even bother asking for permission to buy, transport or own a pistol in 38 Super or Commando (?) caliber. Applying for these will be denied"

38 Supers being legal in Mexico is a myth going back to the 1970s gun rag writers who spoke with authority about things way beyond their limited knowledge.

My bright stainless ELCEN serial numbered 38 Super sits on the desk as I type.
I think this, (no legal ownership of a Super 38, in Mexico) will come as quite a surprise to most; as it certainly did to me. Thanks

What should not be a surprise however, is how many handguns ARE in the hands of the people in Mexico.

A few months back there was a bare Colt 1911 "El" something-or-other .40 S&W slide for sale on eGhey. It got way too rich for my blood, and I walked away. I would have liked to have gotten it. Oh well...

Several more I didn't have on the list found in the link but may as well close the thread....the link has all the answers and more! Way to many El guns for me to chase them all. So I'll have El Nada Uno of them.

It's amazing there are that many variations and they still bring that much money. I was pretty pumped up to find that link as there are quite a few autos on there you never would think are Lew Horton. I saved the file just in case it disappears one day.

I gather you have no family in Mexico...? I'm here to tell you if you have the money in Mexico you will have a gun. I lived there as a kid in the 70's and my Father's side of the family still live there. Plenty of our family and friends have handguns. Now truth be told that the most sought after is a "Mexican Magnum", i.e. a Colt 1911 in 38 Super. Yea they have some crazy laws in Mexico, but then again after the Revolution in the early 1910's and the Cristero War in the mid 1920's NO ONE there trusts the Mexican Government. The whole government there is shady, 'El Chapo' approves of this...

A lot of making those models was not Colt but the distributor. I live down here in the SW and do not understand all of it, but it is nice to be able to find 38 Super ammo in many places at not that high of a price. I got a regular Colt 38 Super.

Now if that had been polished SS then it probably would have been gone from the LGS before I saw it on a weekend.

The El aguilla is worth more of the two. Right around 2500-3000 range if you get a good auction going wit lots of pics. The eagle is probably around 1700 in my opinion.

Once again I need to put to rest a myth, an old wives's tale, a made-up story told by gun rag writers. THE 38 SUPER IS NOT LEGAL FOR OWNERSHIP BY CIVILIANS IN MEXICO!!!!!!! 38 Special may be approved as well as 380 Auto. Anything more powerful or of military issue anywhere is forbidden. The 38 Super is given special treatment. Basically the license forms say (translated) "do not under any circumstance apply for permission to own 38 Super Auto or 38 Commando pistol".

No, I have never heard of 38 Commando either. But the message is very clear. If you apply for a 38 Super automatic pistol permit expect trouble. It's the kind of trouble us gringos are not used to. They probably selected 38 Super because Guns and Ammo and Guns magazines repeatedly printed the lie about 38 Supers being licensed in Mexico. People believed the story and applied. I lived there for years. I filled out the SEDENA forms for handgun ownership and I know individuals responsible for these licenses.

Granted many Mexicans own 38 Super Autos......and AK47s and 9mm Glocks and M4 carbines. All illegal. I once refused to spend the night in a house where an illegal handgun could have been found. Mexico takes pride in the brutality of the penal system when it comes to us gringos.

If you doubt what I'm telling you Google SEDENA ARMAS. The text will be, of course, in Spanish.

I'll address this again in six months when a "38 Super legal in Mexico" post pops up.
