The serial number for this old Colt Positive Police Revolver is 76600. I was wondering what year this revolver was manufactured and also what is a value for the revolver. Also, I was wondering what Police Department this revolver came from? Thanks, Tad View attachment 21200 View attachment 21201
Tad,

I think it was made around 1910. If you haven't posted this in the "Revolvers" section yet you should do so. You will get quite a few more replies. Title the thread "DPD marked Police Positive 32"
It could be a Detroit PD gun. Most of their guns were nickel.

I just picked up this neat little nickel .32 Police Positive and it came with a modified Heiser holster. The gun belonged to Bill Rogers a Special Investigator for the Office of Attorney General, State of Utah. The holster has the initials WR (William Rogers) embossed on the front.

I am still looking for a Police Positive in 38 special , Nickel , 5" barrel , black factory grips , Mint.
I remember that you were looking for one and I did run across one and sent you the link. This was a couple of years ago. It was the only one that I have seen since I bought this one:

RARE FIND

I just received this Police Positive Special. It is in .38 Special and has a 2 1/2" barrel which is very rare. This gun was shipped in 1922 which is five years before the 2" barrel Detective Special was introduced. The gun was previously owned by Massad Ayoob who is one of America's best-known combat pistol shooter's and has written many books on the issue.

Nickle 1922 Police Positive with 2" barrel

Here is my 1922 police positive with a 2" barrel I scored from a pawn shop here in Houston. I paid almost $600 which I now see is very high for these pistols. I liked the gun a lot though, and didn't want to take the chance of passing it up, and someone else buying it.

Before this pistol, the oldest gun I had was from 1963, so I'm very excited to have found it. The only thing I knew at the time of the purchase was that it was pretty old because of the square grip. I was thinking maybe 40's or newer. I admit I didn't know much about it and thought it could be as new as 70's. I had only taken a slight look at the gun before I just told them I would buy it. Excited to own a Colt pistol. They had it marked as a detective special .38 special. Come to find out it's a Police positive .38 not .38 special.

There are two markings that I don't know what they mean. One is LY and the other LT. The only other markings on the gun are Police Positive .38 and the Colt pony.

I will upload better pics soon, this one is from my cell phone on the car ride home.

EDIT: Upon closer inspection I believe one marking might say LYH, the other is LT. Also, my SN is 143780. I have now found conflicting dates. I checked proofhouse, then I found another site that said 1919. Any input would be great. Thanks.

here is another side shot. Also, what should i pay in the future? I am going to be on the lookout for an original 2 1/2" .38 from the early 20's. So if you would not mind telling me what you think this piece is worth with it's current stocks. Then please tell me what you think an early 1920's pp would go for with original nickle finish and original 2 1/2" barrel so that i do not over pay for the next one. Seriously guys thanks. I am hooked on colts and will be buying them every chance i have. I love you guys for all the help and generosity.[/quote]

:D

Here is another picture without the butt grips. What's the verdict? Is this round or square? lol

You know, as Malysh said earlier, we critique what's posted here on its merit; it's not personal. You posted and asked for our opinions and then implied it was a "quiz." I let that pass. When I asked for a clear picture of the grip frame, you post a distorted view from an angle that makes it difficult to tell whether this is the narrow or wider frame, much less whether it is square, round or has been partially rounded at some point, and then ask for an opinion, adding "lol." Perhaps I should have been more specific and asked for a 90 degree profile view of the grip frame, so I would not have gotten a teaser photo accompanied by a taunting question. If you are serious about determining what you have, we are here to help; if you are here just to "play," then enjoy your new Colt.

Based on your second picture, which you apparently posted while I was typing the above, it's definately a square butt. The little bit of rounded area is consistent with what an original looks like.

If you want a real period look, get a set of stocks from NC Ordnance. They have the black style with the "C" around the screw holes that replicate the original hard rubber that would have been on it in '22.

Oh, and as far as paying $600 for it, you didn't pay too much, you just paid it too soon!

Try to have fun. I am having fun learning about my colt. I keep hearing that your critique is not personal. Your reading into this too much with own negative point of view. It never ceases to amaze me. I can say thanks a million times and even my love for you guys and still get negative results. No good sees goes unpunished. Lighten up. I put lol because I still did not know if the butt was rounded. I thought it was funny that I was looking straight at the gun and still could not tell..you know...laughing at myself for being so uneducated on the subject. I will also point out that all my typing and pictures have been done via my phone. So what's the verdict round or square? I took the pictures at angles I thought would help. I will be happy to provide addition information via a specific. request

Blu, it's a square butt.
The internet can be a wonderful thing but it's not always a very good medium for "tongue and cheek" humor.
I understood what you meant, but I've misinterpreted people's posts before myself.
