I posted this in a thread where it was relevant but since it may be of broader interest, posted again here with a bit of dialog. Gain Twist is the only name I ever heard of it - where the rate of twist (turns per inch) in rifling increases thru the bore, from very little at the entry (or cylinder) to the muzzle where it is much greater.

Gain twist is present in all the perc Colt types I have been able to check, Dragoon, 1849 Pocket, 1851 Navy & 1860 Army.

As far as I know, none of the repro makers have done gain twist rifling, which is one of my check items. I was offered a Dragoon in trade & being suspicious about the dealer, I checked and found the barrel with constant rifling, meaning the barrel was a modern repro antiqued to look right. NO deal.

Right -- to the best of my knowledge, no reproduction out there has gain twist, only the original does. I shoud say this means YET TO DATE. It is only a matter of time before a crafty forger starts creating reproduction parts with the intent to fraud that contain gain twist.

Yes indeed, the did treat syphilis with mercury, but anti-biotics were 50+ years away from being invented....and the side effects of mercury treatment were mild compared with the effects of full blown syphilis!
Never forget: one should never judge actions in the past by modern standards! To do so is an absurbity.

So...trying to put all this together then, I guess 'Gain Twist' Syphilis would start out rotating only a little, and then increase it's rotation rate as it went on ahead.

They don't call 'em 'spiral-ketes' for nothin'!

( Ohhh, that was bad, sorry...)

Anyway, all kidding aside...I always admired the Gain Twist Rifling.

To me it seems the most elegant, the most formal, and is entirely deferential to the progress of the acceleration phase ( or Barrel phase ) of the Bullet.

I think sometimes it has been called 'Progressive Twist' also.

Pretty good Article in the History and Treatment of Syphilis - in which "Dr. Ehrlich's Magic Bullet" plays a role of course!
