Over thirty years ago a friend, now deceased, asked me to make him a rig like Hopalong Cassidy wore. He already had two 2nd generation Colt .45s engraved in the exact pattern as on Hoppy's guns, and with real ivory. The museum where they were at then let him take pictures for the engraver to copy. Here it is with his guns in it, and also pictures taken years later where he went buffalo hunting in full Hoppy attire. His rifle was a .45-70 Shiloh Sharps #3 Sporter.

As a kid, I had a pair of Hoppy look-a-like cap guns, holsters and belt. For years my Mom had photos she took of both Me and my Brother standing next to Hoppy and taken at the old Knot's Berry Farm in Calif. Hoppy has his hands up and we had our cap guns out like a holdup! Also one taken with Crash Corrigan, another with Gen Autry at Columbia Studios. Wish I had those photo still, my grandson would love them! - Many of these old Hollywood Cowboys make themselves available on Saturdays for such photos as kids really were their bread and butter! Thanks Wyatt for posting your friends photos, brings back memories of so many things...

When the Hoppy guns were getting engraved, engraver Frank Leaman noticed a mistake in the engraving in one area between the flutes. He included those mistakes. I think I read somewhere that Hoppy“s guns were not the same caliber but one being .45 Co,t, the other .44 WCF. Both compatible with the same blanks, of course.

When I was a kid back in the 40's there was an ad on the back page of some of the comic books that sold Hoppy's neckerchief slide for a quarter,I still have mine. The leather pants belt that Gordon Davis made for me when he started his business many yrs ago has a Hoppy belt buckle on it w/a likeness of him on it ,awhile back I had a doctor appointment & he was a little younger than me & I was wearing that belt & he said I've never seen one of those I was a big fan of his when I was a kid.

As you know Matt, Mike treasured those holsters! He made a great Hoppy!
Also Frank did an excellent job recreating those Colts!

I guess his daughter has it and the guns now. Hoppy's rig originally had a complete open space in the center of the stitched on belt drop loops right behind and above the gun. Apparently it was a weak spot and a filler was put on later. I made it like it was after that was added. Thast's not a Hoppy gun in the left picture but that's them on the right with Mike wearing it.

There's a lot of engraving on it that didn't show because of the nickel.I forgot to mention to look @ the neckerchief slide on the bandana,it's Tim's brand from his working ranch before he got in the movies,it's silver w/gold lettering- it reads "rafter HE connected" he took it from the Arapaho name he was given when he was adopted into the tribe which was "high eagle"
