I'm curious, how can we tell it's Giraffe bone and not hippo, ox, buffalo or any other big boned critter even Elephant? And, who's killing all the giraffes and why is no one whining about it?

Neither is listed as endangered. Worldwide there are about 100,000 giraffe and about 400,000 Elephant.

I don't think poachers are killing Giraffes for their bones. What I hear about is poachers killing rino's ooops I meant Rhinos.

 

My USFA is at Nutmeg Sports getting fitted with one piece Giraffe bone grips, as I type this. I have a 3rd Gen. on lay-away and when I get it, I will have either Mastodon or Stag grips put on that one.

The more I see giraffe bone stocks the more I like them. I'm thinking I should obtain a set before the PETA crowd finds a politician here in California that is into banning everything from plastic straws on up and decides to make a statement and ban the sale and possession of giraffe bones too.

The cortical (solid) bone is not thick enough on cow bones to make good grip material for SAAs. They marrow cavity is large meaning the bones are too ”hollow” for use. The thickest cortical bone is found in the metapodials but they are rarely large enough to accommodate a single action grip profile.

 

You shouldn't have to kill a Giraffe for it's bones surely they die of other causes.......

Realistically? Having seen where ivory and pearl have gone in the last 30 years, I think that is a smart move.

 

Now you guys have me thinking (and pardon for posting within the SAA forum): Can giraffe bone be big enough to be used creatively for two piece long gun stocks (e.g., old falling block)?

 

Giraffe bone is extremely hard. Much harder than cow, buffalo or other smaller animal bone. Remember, those long slender bones have to support a lot of weight, so the bone isn't as porous. Much denser.
Also, in some areas they have too many giraffes and they need to be culled.

 

I have traveled in South Africa and Mozambique. Giraffe is not endangered in those countries. The thing people have to remember is that Africa is many different countries under a variety of governments. Usually the countries that allow sport hunting and the revenue generated by that, will have pretty good populations of wildlife.

I see some giraffe grips in my future!

 

Exactly right! I've been to Zimbabwe and SA there is a big difference between conservation and preservation. The countries that practice conservation through hunting have thriving wildlife.

Very nice fit and color match . The lower part at the trigger guard match up and the curve is a tricky one , the angle of your photo looks good .

 

Here is a color comparison of cream color Mammoth (project not finished) . I think you guys Giraffe looks just as nice .

 

Two of my Giraffe grips and one Ram's Horn. I really like the way giraffe bone has the different shades in them. They actually remind me of ivory.

Hey VoyPescado All 3 of these grips came from John on Ebay. He makes makes them slightly oversized so you can fit them to your frame. He is a nice guy to work with.

 

Y’all are killing me. I’ve got a few single actions in mind that I’d like to build some giraffe bone grips for but I’ll be darned if sourcing the stuff in “hobby” quantities online isn’t dang near impossible. Even the eBay sellers seems to have dropped of in the last year or so. I’m wondering if this can be attributed to policy or scarcity??

Baby oil (mineral oil) will keep them hydrated but to have them stabilized you need to send them to be stabilized.
