I see we had a couple of locked threads just as I was going to reply with a gun related post :)

Quoting the rule for THE LOUNGE, "This area is for discussions on all other gun related talk. Please keep topics on firearms related issues," I believe the following is within said rule as it is not my intention to try and circumvent the locks.

____________

While not all politicians (either Democrat or Republican) can be counted on to abide by or agree with everything in the platform of their respective party, the platform does give us a general idea of each parties stance on the issues.

Posted below is, firstly, the Democratic Platform from 2012 on firearms, followed by the 2012 Republican Platform about same.

Firearms. We recognize that the individual right to bear arms is an important part of the American tradition, and we will preserve Americans' Second Amendment right to own and use firearms. We believe that the right to own firearms is subject to reasonable regulation. We understand the terrible consequences of gun violence; it serves as a reminder that life is fragile, and our time here is limited and precious. We believe in an honest, open national conversation about firearms. We can focus on effective enforcement of existing laws, especially strengthening our background check system, and we can work together to enact commonsense improvements—like reinstating the assault weapons ban and closing the gun show loophole—so that guns do not fall into the hands of those irresponsible, law-breaking few.

The Second Amendment: Our Right to Keep and Bear Arms

We uphold the right of individuals to keep and bear arms, a right which antedated the Constitution and was solemnly confirmed by the Second Amendment. We acknowledge, support, and defend the law-abiding citizen’s God-given right of self-defense. We call for the protection of such fundamental individual rights recognized in the Supreme Court’s decisions in District of Columbia v. Heller and McDonald v. Chicago affirming that right, and we recognize the individual responsibility to safely use and store firearms. This also includes the right to obtain and store ammunition without registration. We support the fundamental right to self-defense wherever a law-abiding citizen has a legal right to be, and we support federal legislation that would expand the exercise of that right by allowing those with state-issued carry permits to carry firearms in any state that issues such permits to its own residents. Gun ownership is responsible citizenship, enabling Americans to defend their homes and communities. We condemn frivolous lawsuits against gun manufacturers and oppose federal licensing or registration of law-abiding gun owners. We oppose legislation that is intended to restrict our Second Amendment rights by limiting the capacity of clips or magazines or otherwise restoring the ill-considered Clinton gun ban. We condemn the reckless actions associated with the operation known as “Fast and Furious,” conducted by the Department of Justice, which resulted in the murder of a U.S. Border Patrol Agent and others on both sides of the border. We applaud the Members of the U.S. House of Representatives in holding the current Administration’s Attorney General in contempt of Congress for his refusal to cooperate with their investigation into that debacle. We oppose the improper collection of firearms sales information in the four southern border states, which was imposed without congressional authority.

The 'democratic' platform reads to me as jesuitical, patronizing, pandering, and using and bending the subject to insinuate their own manipulative ends into it.

The 'republican' platform reads to me as being fairly forthright and pretty much about the subject itself, as itself, even offering examples of what it upholds, and encourages, and what it condemns.

Which is also to say, the 'democratic' platform leaves me wondering just what the subject ( really ) is...and, I am not left with that sense, when having read the 'republican' platform.

The Founding Fathers Platform:
A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.[SUP]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_Amendment_to_the_United_States_Constitution#cite_note-8[/SUP]

Libertarian Party Platform:

We affirm the individual right recognized by the Second Amendment to keep and bear arms, and oppose the prosecution of individuals for exercising their rights of self-defense. We oppose all laws at any level of government requiring registration of, or restricting, the ownership, manufacture, or transfer or sale of firearms or ammunition.

Proud to be a Libertarian.

The Dumbacrat platform is just meaningless words that serve to allay the masses, while they make back room deals
and collude with international gun grabbing organizations.
Don't be fooled, look at their actions not platform window dressings.

We will have to stand together, fund organizations that promote the 2nd
and hold our politicians feet to the fire,,,starting with our local and state employees.

I joined the NFATCA today and will upgrade my NRA status.

As bad as the "Assualt weapons ban" is, the the gunshow loophole part really scares the **** out of me. Basically if that goes through every firearm sold (gunshows have nothing to do with it either) will have to go through a FFL Dealer. You couldnt even sell your neighbor you've known all your life a gun without it going through an FFL. It is a very slippery slop once you start down it. Sad thing is I know of a few FFL Dealers who actually support it because they will make ALOT more money if it goes through.
Another thing which burns me up is you have people like this preaching closing the gunshow loophole because of the VA Tech shootings.
Gun Show Loophole Still Not Closed - ABC News

I live in the area, I LOVE my HOKIES, my brother graduated from Tech and I used to go to all the home games and even one of the Sugar Bowls-for you guys from Texas, I wont bring that up:p. Other than the families and close friends of the victims, no one felt it harder and was deeply saddened than us who live here in the area and LOVE VA Tech. NOT ONE GUN used in the shootings was bought at a gun show from a private person. They tracked them down, they all came from gunshops/pawnshops from FFL Dealers and were 100% legal transactions, he passed every background check they had!!!
