I have owned several over the years. Now I have two. Both are excellent in their own right.
The S&W M&P (pre 2.0) is would serve very well as a duty pistol. The trigger is very crisp and the gun is very accurate. It is a reliable workhorse in every sense of the word.
The FN Hipower defines superlative. It is incredibly accurate and simply feels “right” in the hand. The balance is outstanding. It is the pistol that other .40s aspire to be! A true show horse!

What do you have??
Best,
Charles

The good ol blocky Glocky was my first personal handgun purchase back in the 90’s from Greentop in Virginia. Still have it. my Model 23 is a second Gen .40
ive added some Trijicon night sights , new slide release, and lighter trigger along the way.
i remember when I went to buy it, there was a ”high capacity” mag ban at the time I guess. I wasn’t even aware. They had two guns in stock. One with an 8 pound trigger pull .. 13 round mags. The other had a 5 pound trigger pull but the 10 round limit mags. i was dumber than a stump about guns back then and luckily the sales guy advised me correctly. Said you can easily change out the trigger assembly, but thats the last of the 13 round mags. the laws changed again of course, but I always appreciated that they looked out for me.
.40 popularity has waned, but I really like the size to power ratio … many rounds into all kinds of target objects And I think it will do the trick.

S&W 4046...the only reason I have this is a reminder more or less of when I was issued one of these my last few years in federal law enforcement. The only difference between this and the one I was issued is this doesn't not have tritium sights though I could add them if I was so inclined. I definitely preferred the Model 64 revolver over this boat anchor.

The rimless, straight walled parent case of the .40 S&W is the 10mm ( 10x25mm ), which was selected by the FBI in 1989 following their quest for a more powerful cartridge after the infamous 1986 FBI Miami Shootout.

Below are my two favorite platforms for that powerful cartridge, as manufactured by Rock Island Armory
