To the American citizen soldier
Who answered the call
Climbed the hill
Paid the price
And never let us down

The vanguard of Lee's Confederate forces - Longstreet, Ewell, and A. P. Hill - coming into Gettysburg from the northwest, met Buford, Buell and Reynolds on the ridges west of town.

Meanwhile, 900 miles to the west, Grant began the final 3 days of the bombardment of Vicksburg.

Both battles ended on Independence Day, as the remains of Lee's army dragged itself west in heavy rain, to get back across the Potomac, and Vicksburg surrendered.
