My '51 Navy with short-ened barrel ------>

 

1862 pocket navy? 5.5" octagon barrel. 1851 with full barrel weighs 42 oz, the pocket weighs 27 oz. stagecoach hold up scene roll engraved on the pocket. Good luck.

 

The 1862 'Pocket Navy' or as it was originally called 'Pocket Pistol of Navy Calibre' has a recessed cylinder and frame and is only 5 shot. There should be no confusion. Both of the pistols pictured are 1851 Navy Colts. The only question is 'did they start out with short barrels. A Factory letter should confirm provided that the numbers are not within the ones where records were destroyed in the fire.

 

Unfortunately Colt's factory records commence at about serial number 98000 and this particular Navy's serial number is 15***. Presume all earlier serial number records must have been lost in the fire.

Hi Prowbar There is a photograph which shows the front end of the barrel with sight, barrel stud and loading lever latch, if you click onto this picture it should enlarge. If you require alternative pictures please let me know. Cannot see any "horse head", if they are there could some one highlight the area to look at.

 

I meant a picture of the front of the barrel, where you basically look into the rifling, but also see the front portion with the sight and loading lever catch.

Thanks. Exactly what I wanted. You can see the patina on the barrel, and how the pitting (?) is comparable to the rest of the gun. That's a good thing. The one I saw with the cut barrel was all wrong, since the above mentioned did not match. Anyway, your gun is either original or the barrel has been cut back in the day. Factory or not, it is still a very nice 3rd model Navy. Enjoy that Colt.
