I have a Colt 1851 Navy manufactured in 1852. The barrel length is 5 1/16 inches. I know that Colt did manufacture, to special order, 1851 Navies with differing barrel lengths. How do you tell if the barrel was actually manufactured by Colt or if it was shortened from the standard 71/2inch barrel. The revolver is in pretty good condition with about 95% silver plating to the backstrap and triggerguard.the cylinder scene is strong and clear and all serial numbers match.

The 1862 'Pocket Navy' or as it was originally called 'Pocket Pistol of Navy Calibre' has a recessed cylinder and frame and is only 5 shot. There should be no confusion. Both of the pistols pictured are 1851 Navy Colts. The only question is 'did they start out with short barrels. A Factory letter should confirm provided that the numbers are not within the ones where records were destroyed in the fire.

Hi Prowbar There is a photograph which shows the front end of the barrel with sight, barrel stud and loading lever latch, if you click onto this picture it should enlarge. If you require alternative pictures please let me know. Cannot see any "horse head", if they are there could some one highlight the area to look at.

Thanks. Exactly what I wanted. You can see the patina on the barrel, and how the pitting (?) is comparable to the rest of the gun. That's a good thing. The one I saw with the cut barrel was all wrong, since the above mentioned did not match. Anyway, your gun is either original or the barrel has been cut back in the day. Factory or not, it is still a very nice 3rd model Navy. Enjoy that Colt.
